LANY — Mama’s Boy

Album artwork · Drawing, gouache, CGI & compositing

Released in October 2020, LANY’s Mama’s Boy debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, placing the album in the US top ten.

My contribution

I developed the image through hand-drawn sketches, gouache painting and digital construction. After making several drawn studies, I painted the horse and rider in gouache and used that painting directly as the base for the sign in the composition. I designed the composition, modeled, textured and rendered its 3D elements in Blender, and brought the image together in Photoshop.

Image development

The process began on paper: drawn sketches established the figure and its gesture, followed by the gouache that became part of the finished sign. The greyscale 3D study shows the sign’s form and placement before the final textured image. Lighting, neon lettering and compositing brought these hand-made and digital elements into the finished album artwork, shown here alongside printed copies of the release.
